Burundi’s renowned rapper, Nzeyimana Thomas, better known by his stage name Mkombozi Lucifer, has revealed his intention to run as an independent candidate in the 2025 parliamentary elections. The announcement was made on Friday when he submitted his candidacy file to the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI). Mkombozi, a longstanding figure in Burundi’s rap scene, aims to bring a stronger voice for youth into the country’s legislative body.
“I noticed that in Parliament, there isn’t a single seat representing us, the youth,” said Nzeyimana, according to a local entertainment site Akeza. “Yet, as young people, we have many talents that could contribute to the country, and our talents could thrive.” In a country with a population of over 13 million, where youth under 25 years account for 67 percent, according to UN estimates, the rapper believes it is crucial to address the challenges faced by the youth.
Nzeyimana’s motivation for running stems from his conviction that the youth are not adequately represented in the National Assembly. “Decisions for the country are made in the National Assembly, but the youth are not represented. All decisions, whether good or bad, affect the youth significantly. I think it’s important for me to be there, to speak from the inside,” he said, adding that speaking from outside the country had already been done.
The rapper, widely known for his outspoken views on national issues, aims to be a catalyst for change. “The youth need hope. I will not be defeated. Even though I may not be elected, only the one who was elected and failed to deliver on their promises can be considered a loser,” Nzeyimana said.
Mkombozi, who gained prominence with his songs like “Papa Nzeyimana,” “Fat’Imisaraba” and “Dusenge” has long used his platform to challenge the status quo. His music has often critiqued the government and called for justice and peace. Following the 2015 political crisis, Mkombozi went into exile, but returned to Burundi in 2021, stating his intention to continue his career without revealing his plans for political engagement until now.
His bid for a parliamentary seat as an independent candidate comes at a time when Burundi faces significant challenges, including an economic crisis, governance issues, and inefficiencies in public institutions. Many young Burundians feel their voices are not represented in decision-making bodies, with some arguing that the current constitutional restrictions prevent young leaders from rising to higher offices.
Lionel N., a Burundian youth from the northern region living in Bujumbura, expressed support for Mkombozi’s candidacy. “I am ready to vote for Mkombozi as a representative of the youth who love entertainment. Mkombozi has always advocated for the youth through his music since 2010. Once he sits in Parliament, he will have an impact,” Lionel said.
Social media users have also rallied behind Mkombozi’s candidacy. One user commented: “If we vote for anyone other than Mkombozi, the elections will be pointless! He is the one I trust to address the youth’s issues. He has always spoken for us in his songs. We will vote for him.”
As Burundi prepares for the 2025 elections, Mkombozi’s candidacy has sparked excitement among young people, who see him as a symbol of hope for their future. With his background in music and activism, Mkombozi’s entry into politics could bring a fresh perspective to the country’s leadership.
