As the 2025 elections approach, Désiré Minani, Governor of Ngozi Province, has called on Burundi’s youth, particularly those affiliated with various political parties, to avoid conflicts and violence associated with the election process.
Speaking at a youth awareness workshop organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CNIDH) in northern Ngozi on Wednesday, Minani warned of the rising political intolerance typically seen during election periods. He urged young people to resist provocations from those holding differing political views, stressing the importance of fostering peace and tolerance.
The workshop, focused on educating young political affiliates about their role in preventing human rights violations during the election period, emphasized peaceful coexistence and responsible conduct. Anaclet Nzohabonayo, Vice President of CNIDH, has urged the youth to serve as role models in ensuring that the election results are accepted by all parties, advocating for restraint and respect for differing opinions.
Nzohabonayo has also called on young people to resist political manipulation, reject financial incentives, and avoid engaging in acts of intimidation or aggression against their political opponents.
Bamazi Kossi Tchaa, Senior Human Rights Advisor for the United Nations in Burundi, has acknowledged the significant role youth play in democratic progress but also warned that they are sometimes exploited for destructive purposes, leading to harmful consequences for national cohesion and stability. He cautioned that political, ethnic, or origin-based hatred and intolerance are major threats to peace, freedom, and stability in Burundi.
Political tensions in Burundi, especially among youth aligned with different political parties, have frequently led to violent confrontations during election periods. These incidents have raised concerns about the country’s stability and security, with many fearing that the 2025 elections could once again be a flashpoint for unrest.
As the country prepares for this crucial election, there is a strong call for the youth to adopt responsible behaviors and avoid repeating the violent patterns of the past, ensuring that the electoral process remains peaceful.
