Two people lost their lives and another sustained serious injuries in a road accident on Wednesday evening in the southern province of Makamba, local police reported.
The collision occurred at approximately 7:45 PM on National Road 11 (RN11), near Kibimba Hill in Kayogoro Commune. According to eyewitness accounts, two Howo-brand dump trucks traveling in the same direction collided due to high speed.
“Two individuals—a driver and his assistant—died on the spot,” a police source confirmed. The third victim, the driver of the leading truck, was rushed to Makamba Hospital for urgent medical care.
Police authorities in Makamba have called on all drivers to adhere to traffic regulations and maintain moderate speeds to prevent such accidents.
The incident has sparked concerns among residents about the braking systems of Howo-brand vehicles, which are often linked to similar accidents. However, Benoît Ngendakumana, head of technical inspections at OTRACO (Burundi’s Public Transport Authority), dismissed these claims. He stated that the braking systems of Howo trucks are generally in good working order, attributing most accidents involving these vehicles to driver error.
