At least three students lost their lives in a tragic lightning strike that hit Kiziba Primary School in the Kiziba area of Musigati Commune, in Bubanza western province on Thursday, leaving the community in shock. According to local authorities, the strike injured 18 students and their teacher while they were studying in the classroom.

Joachim Nduwumukama, the administrator of Musigati Commune, confirmed the incident on Friday, emphasizing the sudden and devastating nature of the event. Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene, noting that when emergency responders arrived, several children were already in critical condition.

“We are hopeful that the injured will recover as we saw that the doctors are attending to them thoroughly. We are now preparing for the funeral services for the deceased children,”Nduwumukama told public broadcaster RTNB earlier on Friday.

This incident is not the first of its kind in Burundi. In 2020, a lightning strike struck a household on Nyarunazi Hill in Buhinyuza Commune, Muyinga northern province, resulting in the deaths of seven people.
