Burundi has announced the temporary suspension of night flights at Melchior Ndadaye International Airport due to ongoing expansion and modernization efforts. The announcement was made by Transport Minister Marie Chantal Nijimbere during a parliamentary session on Thursday, where she underscored the importance of ensuring uninterrupted progress on the airport’s development.

“Currently, no night flights are allowed at Melchior Ndadaye International Airport due to the ongoing expansion works,” local magazine Jimbere quoted Minister Nijimbere as saying. Her remarks came during her presentation of new international regulations affecting Burundi’s aviation sector.

Meanwhile, the first phase of the expansion project at Melchior Ndadaye International Airport, launched in late August by President Évariste Ndayishimiye, is progressing as part of a broader effort to modernize Burundi’s aviation infrastructure.

The construction of modern runways for takeoff and landing, new terminals to accommodate aircraft, as well as a 12-story control tower, are part of this first phase, which will be financed with assistance from China and executed by the Chinese company Shanghai Baoye Group Corporation Ltd, according to local media reports.
