Eight people, including a woman and her child, tragically lost their lives in an accident on Friday morning at 7:45 AM in Gwingwe, Vyuya Hill, Mugamba Commune, Bururi Province, southern Burundi, local media reported.
More than ten others, including the driver, sustained serious injuries and were immediately transported to Matana Hospital for medical treatment.
Rambert Ndayishimiye, the head of Vyuya zone, reported that the Hiace vehicle was en route from Bujumbura to Gishubi in Gitega central province, according to Burundi’s public broadcaster, RTNB. Authorities, in collaboration with emergency services, responded swiftly to assist the injured and recover the bodies. Efforts are ongoing to identify the deceased and secure their belongings.
Police officials said that the accident occurred in a mountainous area characterized by steep slopes and sharp bends. The vehicle, reportedly traveling at high speed, failed to negotiate a curve and veered off the road, leading to the fatal crash.
